Dad’s left leg on the foot of my bed
a flat top with black, sunbursting to red
We studied each word he sang into the night
He’d cradle that guitar on one knee
There was no place I’d rather be
riding soundwaves off into the dark

Neither was perfect, but here’s the thing
in our beds we were in the “west Texas town of El Paso”
Gave us music, and a chance to be free
taught us joy wrapped in a melody

Johnny’s mutton chops framed his face
a man in black of our own time and place
Set our dreams to classic country songs
He sang “Amanda, light of my life”
“Come Home It’s Supper Time” sung in the moonlight
Had us stepping on that “Green, Green Grass of Home”
